You’ll apply these concepts right away through a series of still life exercises, progressing from simple objects to more complex arrangements. This gradual approach helps you build skills step-by-step while gaining confidence in your ability to see and draw.
Still life arrangement 1
We start with simple objects and learn how to apply the basic principles of constructive drawing and shading.
What this arrangement will teach you:
How to measure object proportions using just a pencil in your hand
The difference between form shadows and cast shadows
How to shade horisontal ,vertical and round surfaces
Still life arrangement 2
We move on to more complex items and learn how to thoughtfully compose them in our artwork.
What this arrangement will teach you:
How to identify and emphasise the focal point of your composition
How varying line thickness can affect the perception of perspective
How to shade both smooth and rough textures
Still life arrangement 3
We finish the course with a still life arrangement of four objects, including reflective materials. In this session, you'll also have the option to experiment with charcoal.

The importance of reflected light and how objects cast shadows and light on one another
The difference between an object's darkness in terms of value versus colour
How to shade reflective materials effectively
